MONUMENT TO PIRANDELLO
DESCRIPTION
The monument to Luigi Pirandello, created in 2004 by the artist Gianluca Bagliano is the direct testimony to the attachment and love he had for the Italian writer and poet dammaturge towards soriano nel Cimino, his summer stays and his tangible attachment to the Cimini hills . The monument was donated by the Municipality of Soriano nel Cimino in memory of the poet’s personality, as mentioned in the plaque placed under the bronze bust “TO LUIGI PIRANDELLO / THE CITIZENS OF SORIANO. IN MEMORY OF / HIS STAYS IN THE PEARL OF CIMINI / 28 AUGUST 2004 ″, the will of the entire Soriano community translates almost a century later as true testimony. in memory of the places and atmospheres experienced by Pirandello. The monument is simple and sober, formed by a large peperino stone as a base on which rests the bronze bust of the poet who looks frontally, portrayed in his typical appearance, severe and deep gaze, beard, wrinkled forehead.
During his university studies in Rome, Pirandello, a pupil of the Soriano professor Ernesto Monaci, began to attend Soriano. In fact, the professor who had taken a liking to him was the intermediary for frequenting the town of Cimina, at first sporadic and then increasingly assiduous of the future Nobel Prize for literature.
In the 10s of the twentieth century, Pirandello stayed several times with his family in Soriano nel Cimino as evidenced by some photographs and some writings of him. He remembered this in various texts (drawings and paintings, poems, short stories, novels, etc.), with creative results that hint at unpublished critical paths up to some of his major works. Already between 1911 and 1913 Pirandello published two short stories in Corriere della Sera, respectively in 1911 and 1913, the tragedy of a failed priest and the enthusiasm of two lovers, set in Soriano nel Cimino. Pirandello loved to spend large periods of the year in the quiet “of the” pleasant and beautiful town rich in historical monuments and immersed in the woods of Monte Cimino “. Especially his summer vacation. Pirandello was fascinated by the majesty and quiet of a beautiful chestnut grove located in the locality of “Pian della Britta”, to which he wanted to dedicate a poem of the same name, which today is carved on a marble plaque placed in that very location. He also set two of his most famous short stories Rondone and Rondinella and Tomassino and the blade of grass in Soriano nel Cimino (citing places, locations and characters that really existed). In Soriano nel Cimino, the memory of Pirandello is still alive today, to whom tombstones and streets are also dedicated.
